The e-commerce market in Mainland China was predicted to grow 7.5% YoY in 2025, a slight slowdown from 7.8% in 2024, said Ju Lixin, an e-commerce analyst of Bank of America Global Research's Greater China Internet and Media Research. E-commerce penetration is expected to reach 33% in 2025, with the number of online shoppers estimated to approach 955 million.

Ju elaborated that overall consumption demand in mainland China remained feeble, but sales of high-priced items such as home appliances and electronics showed signs of recovery, thanks to the central government's ongoing stimulus policies.

Ju expected competition in the e-commerce sector to persist, with the rise of new channels such as TENCENT (00700.HK)’s e-commerce, MEITUAN-W (03690.HK)’s O2O, and RedNote, as well as the emergence of AI tools. She also believed that offline experience consumption will continue to outperform physical merchandise sales in 2025.
